Lloyd Lyman Smith, Jr. was born in Los Angeles, CA, in 1909. He attended the University of Minnesota and received his doctorate from the University of Michigan. He worked as a biologist for the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries and the U.S. Forest Service. While working for the Minnesota Department of Conservation, he was offered an appointment at the University of Minnesota in 1946 to teach the first course in fisheries management.
